At Movement Therapy, we’re constantly inspired by the dedication of our clients, and Mikailey’s journey is one we’re particularly proud to share. Mik, a talented 13-year-old gymnast from Gravity, came to us in December 2023 after rupturing her ACL. She and her mum, Bec, were understandably unsure about their next steps, but with the right guidance and a solid plan, Mik achieved incredible results.
When Mik first met with Sam, our physiotherapist, he introduced them to the Tom Cross Brace Protocol. This conservative treatment approach allows the ACL to heal naturally by stabilizing the knee with a brace that initially limits movement. Over time, the brace is adjusted to gradually increase extension, all while pairing this with structured rehab exercises to maintain strength and mobility. With Mik’s brace fitted at The Stadium Clinic the very next day, she was ready to begin her recovery.
For the next three months, Mik worked closely with Sam during weekly sessions, where her progress exceeded expectations. Her hard work and commitment to the protocol were key in achieving such a remarkable recovery. Once the initial phase of her rehab was complete, Mik transitioned to working with Liam, our exercise physiologist. Liam focused on refining her movement patterns, rebuilding strength, and preparing her for a return to competitive gymnastics.
By the end of 2024, Mik was back doing what she loves most—competing in gymnastics. Not only did she return, but she excelled, achieving podium finishes in several events. Her resilience and positive attitude throughout her recovery inspired everyone around her, including her teammates at Gravity and the team at Movement Therapy. In recognition of her incredible journey, Mik was awarded the first-ever MT Resilience in Motion Award.
Mik’s story highlights the effectiveness of the Tom Cross Brace Protocol, which provides a structured, non-surgical pathway for ACL recovery, particularly for young athletes. Her journey is a testament to what’s possible with the right approach and a determined mindset. We couldn’t be prouder of Mik and are excited to see all she achieves in the year ahead.
